Mark A. Carter, PhD

Mark Carter has been an educator for 35 years. Mark has held the positions of elementary classroom teacher (Grades 2–6), elementary instructional specialist, coordinator of assessment for language arts and mathematics K–12, and middle school language arts teacher and department chair.

Mark received his master’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1978. He completed the requirements for a PhD in early and middle childhood education in 1992 and received his doctorate degree from The Ohio State University. Mark earned national board certification in 2002 as a middle childhood teacher and master teacher designation in 2010. Dr. Carter has conducted in-service training throughout the United States on a variety of assessment topics. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in reading assessment, adolescent literacy, educational philosophy, and master teacher certification. Dr. Carter has written extensively about classroom-based assessment practices. He is co-author of Portfolio Assessment in the Reading and Writing Classroom, the Developing Writer’s Assessment (DWA) Grades K–6, the DRA3 Benchmark Assessment (Grades 4–8), and the DRA3 Progress Monitoring Assessment.
