Does emotional wellbeing at school influence learning and development?
According to the European Commission, school wellbeing, which involves feeling safe, respected and valued, helps pupils to develop, learn and play creatively, leading to happiness, school satisfaction and better performance.
The relationship between students' mental and emotional wellbeing and academic success has been extensively explored in several studies. For example, a recent meta-analysis indicates that "academic success is closely related to pupils' emotional and mental wellbeing" (Sacco, Camilleri, Eberhardt et al., 2022).
However, experts report that “20% of European school children face emotional and mental health problems, particularly anxiety and depression, during their schooling” (Cefai, Simões, & Caravita, 2021). Given mental wellbeing's influence on academic performance, this poses a unique and critical issue for education professionals to tackle.
