Features

Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile works as a part of the Sensory Profile family of products which includes Sensory Profile, Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile, and the Sensory Profile School Companion. 

The Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile consists of 36 items for children birth to 6 months, and 48 items for children 7 to 36 months.

  • The caregiver questionnaire contains items divided into sensory systems (e.g., for children birth to 6 months, there are four quadrant scores and one combined quadrant score).
  • The quadrant scores reflect the child's responsiveness to sensory experiences, and are based on Dunn's Model of Sensory Processing.
  • Low threshold items are particularly relevant with some disability groups, so a combined quadrant score (low threshold) is provided, that is the combination of Sensory Sensitivity and Sensation Avoiding quadrant scores. 
  • Six sensory processing systems are addressed; five are scored.

When should I use the Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile?

Pattern Grids provide information on the sensory systems (e.g., visual, auditory, movement). By examining the item scores and how they are clustered, you can get a more detailed picture of an individual's sensory processing preferences.

How does it meet IDEA '97 mandates?

IDEA Part C requires that states ensure that appropriate early intervention services are available to all infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. These services are to be designed to meet the developmental needs of an infant or toddler with a disability in any one or more of the following areas: physical development, cognitive development, communication development, social or emotional development or adaptive development. The law indicates that evaluations must explore the infant or toddler's needs in a comprehensive way, and must include family-identified needs and concerns. Early intervention services are to be provided in natural environments, including the home and community settings. Professionals collaborate with families to identify supports and barriers to successful performance. The Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile evaluates an infant or toddler's performance in customary environments, focuses on family concerns, and links the effects of a child's disability to that child's participation in appropriate activities. The law intends that services should enhance the capacity of families to meet the special needs of their infants and toddlers with disabilities. The Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile meets these intents with the Caregiver Questionnaire and the family friendly intervention suggestions provided in the User's Manual. The Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile also provides evidence of validity for the specific purpose for which it is intended.

Is it appropriate to administer the Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile on a child with severe disabilities?

Yes. If you administer the test to someone who has difficulty completing a self-report, you may adapt the administration procedures to allow a caregiver to answer the questions. You may even offer the respondent significant assistance offering extensive clarification or repeated examples, probing repeatedly to elicit answers to facilitate his or her completion of the instrument. However, if you adapt the administration procedures, you may not use the classification system based on comparative results using standardized procedures. You may, however, use your clinical judgment to assist in your understanding of the individual's sensory processing patterns and design intervention strategies that incorporate your understanding.
