About the programme

What is Cogmed Working Memory Training?

Cogmed Working Memory Training is an evidence-based, computerised training program designed by leading neuroscientists to improve attention by effectively increasing working memory capacity over a 5 week training period.

Through combining cognitive neuroscience with innovative computer game design and close professional support, Cogmed can deliver substantial and lasting benefits to its users:

  • Aims to improve attention by increasing working memory capacity
  • A software-based, coach-supported training programme
  • Can be completed in around five weeks
  • For children and adults alike
  • Based on solid research

Who is Cogmed training for?

Cogmed training is for people who wish to improve their ability to concentrate and are constrained by their working memory. About 10% of the population (reference: Alloway et al. (2009). The cognitive and behavioural characteristics of children with low working memory. Child Development, 80, 606–621) is held back in their daily performance by their working memory capacity. Cogmed users range from young children to senior adults. Some have diagnosed attention deficits, some have suffered a brain injury, some feel the deteriorating effects of normal aging, and others find they’re not doing as well as they could, academically or professionally, given their intelligence and their efforts.

What is working memory and why is it important?

Working memory is an essential cognitive function necessary for a wide-range of tasks related to attention and focus. It is the ability to keep information in your mind for several seconds, manipulate it, and use it in your thinking. It is central to concentration, problem solving, and impulse control.

A strong working memory is essential for learning. Poor working memory can be the cause of a significant impairment for students.

Working memory is closely correlated to fluid intelligence and is a strong indicator of academic and professional success.

Poor working memory is the source of many problems related to attention and is often linked to ADHD, and other learning disabilities.

About the outcomes

What are the effects of Cogmed training?

Cogmed training can improve attention, concentration, focus, impulse control, social skills, and complex reasoning skills by substantially and lastingly improving working memory capacity. The goal is improved performance and attentional stamina.

Do the results last?

Yes, research and experience show that the effects of Cogmed Training last after training. The reason is that once working memory capacity increases, you naturally continue to use it at its new level, which serves as constant maintenance training.

Where can I access Cogmed training?

Within the UK and ROI, Cogmed is available on a subscription basis - small, medium or large - for schools, healthcare and independent practitioners. Cogmed is also available through a few independent practices in the UK. If you are interested in accessing Cogmed through an independent practice, please go to Cogmed in your area.

Cogmed is also available to international schools from the UK office: for all other international interest, please visit http://www.cogmed.com/category/footer/cogmed-in-your-area

How do I know that Cogmed will be of benefit?

In our research and in the practical experience of the Cogmed practices worldwide, 80% of users see measurable improvements. No intervention works for everyone. 80% is a number we are proud of, but we cannot provide guarantees in any particular case.

What kind of research is behind Cogmed?

Cogmed is developed by leading neuroscientists and based on the breakthrough concept that the working memory can be improved through intensive, systematic training. Cogmed is dedicated to providing only products that are proven to be effective in rigorous research.

There have been numerous studies that show Cogmed to be effective, applying the gold standard of clinical research: double-blind placebo-controlled designs. Several of the studies have been published in leading, peer-reviewed scientific journals. The work has been done by Cogmed’s founders and by independent teams at leading American and European universities.

No other brain training product or attention training method can show this degree of research validation.

Please see Research for further information

Cogmed Coach Training

Where does the training take place?

Cogmed training is done at the user's home, in school or at work, using a computer running Windows that is connected to the internet. This can be done in a group or individual basis. Please visit http://www.cogmed.com/system-requirements for system requirements.

Is Cogmed training a substitute for medication?

No, it is not. In the case of users on ADHD medication, Cogmed training is a complementary intervention. Stimulant medication and Cogmed training impact the brain in different ways. Medications will have effects that Cogmed training does not, particularly regarding hyperactivity. Cogmed training will also, in many cases, have effects that cannot be achieved by medication only.

How is Cogmed different from other types of “brain training”?

Cogmed is different from “brain training programs” in three ways:

  • Cogmed training is backed by solid research that no one else can match.
  • Cogmed training is provided exclusively by organisations who have participated in coach training. They make sure each Cogmed user gets the coaching needed for the best possible results.
  • An outstanding track record of strong and lasting effects in our thousands of users around the world show that Cogmed training makes a real difference in people’s lives.

In short: research, coaching, and results. Obviously, the results are what really matter.

Can you coach more than one child at a time using the Cogmed method?

It is very practical to use the program with a group of children at a time; in fact it is something we encourage. We suggest you start with a small group, and increase the group sizes as you become more familiar with the program. The only requirements for you to do this are to ask the children to use headphones.

Cogmed Online Seminars

How does the online seminar work?

The audience views slides through their web browser and hears the speaker's commentary over the telephone or through their computer. Online seminars are commonly referred to as webinars.

Will I be charged for my call?

There's no charge if you listen through your computer but, failing that, you will only be charged the same price as a local or national call (depending on your location) if you listen via your telephone. If there isn't a phone number for your location, please either use the VOIP option (ie listen through your computer) or one of the other international numbers (charged at your call provider's international rate).

Can I listen to the presentation through my computer?

Yes, you can listen to the presentation through your computer. However, we advise that you check your computer sound before the session. We'd also recommend a headset or earphones if you are in a shared office. Please email cogmeduk@pearson.com with any further questions.

Troubleshooting

Cursor is disappearing

If the cursor is “disappearing”, this is because RM is playing out the instructions. If the speakers are not on this could cause further confusion.

Instructions can be stopped by pressing the space bar on the keyboard. Also, please ensure the machine is running the latest version of Flash. You can get the latest version of Flash from the Adobe website

Unable to print user’s tables/graphs from the training web

If the screen freezes when trying to print the user’s graphs and tables, it could be because the version of Flash on the machine is too old.

To check which version of Flash you have:

Right click on the screen and choose “About Adobe Flash player” which will show the version currently installed. You can get the latest version of Flash from the Adobe website.

If I cancel a user’s training will this be added back on to my quota allowance?

If the training is cancelled within 3 days of starting then your quota will go back up by 1. If the training is cancelled after 3 days, please contact Customer Services.

“Communicating with server” appears during program

This could be happening for one of two reasons:

  • Too many users are attempting to use the program on one network at once.
  • There is an issue with the Cogmed server.

Please try using a different web browser. If you still experience problems, please contact Customer Services on 0845 630 8888 (Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm - calls cost 3p per minute plus your phone company's access charge)), or email info@pearsonclinical.co.uk.

Cogmed Version 4

Why has Cogmed been updated?

We have had many requests from Cogmed coaches to give them greater flexibility in how they administer training, being able to access Cogmed via an app on a tablet device gives the coach more options that would allow it’s use in a variety of settings. While upgrading to functioning on the iPad we added all of the other new functionality you see today.

Is the new program available everywhere?

The new Cogmed Coaching Centre has been released in the U.S in December 2014 and the UK will follow in January 2015. We will then begin a country-by-country roll out with the goal of migrating everyone in 2015.

Can I use the new platform on my Android tablet?

Yes, the new platform is now available on Android and iOS.

I am using Cogmed 4.0 on tablet for the first time, why is it running so slowly?

When you use Cogmed for the first time on your tablet device you may notice that the program is running a little slowly, this is because there is a lot of information downloading. This only happens the first time that you use it. Once the files needed have downloaded the program will move much faster.

How do I login to the new Version 4 platform?

It is easy to log into the new platform.

For Tablets:

After downloading the app from the appropriate store (App Store or Play Store) simply enter your Cogmed credentials and go.

For laptops or desktops:

There is a new sign in procedure. You must now go to mycogmed.com then login as usual.

Can I continue to use training.cogmed.com to access the program?

Yes. On laptop or desktop computers users will have a choice of using the new or old platform. To use the old training web, log into training.cogmed.com like you have always done. You may not, however, log into training web from a tablet. No new updates will be added to the training web.

I am used to the training web but I want to use my iPad to access it. Is that possible?

You cannot access the old training web from an iPad or android tablet. For the near term you may continue to access the training web from a laptop or desktop computer. We plan to migrate everyone to the new platform by mid to late 2015. You will receive plenty of lead time and warning when that happens.

Who can I contact for additional information?

Please contact us at info@pearsonclinical.co.uk or call 0845 630 88 88 if you have any questions.

We wonder if there are any restrictions regarding marketing of Cogmed?  In particular we are hoping to take a photo of a child at a computer using Cogmed.  Is this allowed?

It is fine to include images of Cogmed in your own marketing material. We will even help you to promote your own practice on the Cogmed mini site. We will place your contact details on our website when you have completed 5 training's with 5 different users. We will also include some information about what you do and a link to your website.

We do however have restrictions around the use of the Cogmed name in a URL or email address. Please do not use the word ‘Cogmed’ in your URL for your website.

Cogmed Progress Indicator includes a ‘following instructions’ task, all the items and directions are reliant on the user not being colour blind, can something be done to make this task appropriate for those with colour blindness?

Unfortunately this element does require the user to be able to interpret the colours on screen and therefore not suitable for those with colour blindness. If this becomes an issue for your user please could you email us with the user number and we can eliminate this particular test from the users CPI.

Can you remove activities if they become too much of a barrier to a users progress?

Yes, we can remove the activity that is causing distress and replace it with another suitable activity. This can be said for all of the activities except for Data link with lid, as this element is required to calculate the index improvement score. We can reduce the number of items within that activity however to make it less challenging for the user, please contact us on info@pearsonclinical.co.uk to make these amendments.

Can you increase the number of plays on Robo-Racing as an extra incentive?

We currently do not have a way to increase the number of plays for Roboracing. The development team are working towards having a way to do this in the future.

How do you do the 30% adjustment, could you explain?

First, login to Training Web, then find the ID that needs adjustment and click on it so it is highlighted. Then click on "Training Administration" and choose "Adjust Training Weight" from the dropdown menu. From this point on, the adjustment process is self explanatory.

If you have a question that hasn't been addressed, please feel free to email us on cogmeduk@pearson.com.
